Quinta do Lago, South Course: review

Quinta do Lago's South Course is the five-star venue's premier track, which is no mean feat when you consider the competition.

Laranjal and the North Course are excellent layouts, but the South Course has that little bit extra - the "X factor" is what Simon Cowell would call it.

Based in Portugal's Algarve, the course is just 15 minutes from Faro airport.

After opening in 1974, the Championship track has hosted the Portugese Open eight times, cementing its reputation as one of the country's best layouts.

Off the tee the South Course offers generous landing areas, but often the fairways are doglegging, so an ability to work the ball both ways is beneficial.

Stray from the short stuff, and you will undoubtedly be in for a tough round. The rough isn't particularly long, but it is thick and getting good contact on your ball is difficult. Often just getting your ball back in the fairway is a solid play.

The fairways are lined with beautiful pine trees, which pose another hazard if you are wayward off the tee.

Greens are protected by well-position bunkers, which boast white, fluffy sand. The putting surfaces are excellent, and role true and fast. The greens are relatively large and flat, meaning there are scoring chances if you can get yourself on in regulation.

While the front nine may give you looks at birdie, you'll have to play well to makes shots back on the way in.

Water is a prominent feature on the back nine, and with it come spectacular views. Players face a nerve-jangling par three island green, before teeing off next to a large lake overlooking the sea in the closing stretch.

A beautiful golf course. Players must stay out of the water and in the fairways to score well. It's kept in a fantastic condition, especially the superb greens.
