Another Spanish Hawtree gem is Golf Girona which enjoys the prime location of being just 4km from the centre of a lovely city and less than an hour from Barcelona.

Golf Girona is close to the airport where many airlines connect directly with all the main cities in Europe.

This par-72 courseis perfectly adapted to the lie of the land and suitable for golfers of all levels.

And just as it is the case at the Hawtree-designed Platja de Pals earlier in the trip, there is a premium on both fades and draws off the tee.

The quality of its design, however, is complemented by well manicured greens. In fact, this is the only course in Spain sown entirely with Penncross - the highest quality of turf for golf.

Opened in 1992, Girona features an array of elevated tee boxes overlooking pine-clad valleys and dramatic ravines, particularly the 12th and 13th. The view for the approach into the dramatic dogleg left-to-right par-4 13th is something to behold.

Sloping fairways and greens make shooting a good score a struggle but the spectacular setting is more than enough to compensate.

The first nine holes are very competitive as the design required me to use every club in the bag. The second nine holes are spectacular in their own right, with all tees placed on walls built with Girona stone.

The course has also recently opened its new floodlit driving range and is now one of most complete driving ranges in the province.
