Sir Nick Faldo, six times a major championship winner, is leading the challenge of Cyprus to become one of Europe's leading golf destinations. In the autumn he will officially open The Elea Golf Club near Paphos, Cyprus, just eight kilometres from the island's the international airport.
?The par 71 golf course, in a striking location above the Mediterranean Sea, features weathered outcrops of limestone dotted among rolling fairways and undulating greens.? ?Says Sir Nick: “When we designed the golf course, we decided to put the emphasis on thoughtful golf, rather than big-hitting.There are plenty of strategic riddles for the golfer to explore and unravel here.”?
The courses winds through mature carob and olive trees, in a carefully planned ecological design, where individual holes are fringed by colourful native ‘garrigue’ flora encouraging local wildlife including partridge, birds of prey and butterflies thriving on the benefits of a carefully protected environment.
So as not to disturb the stunning views, the new clubhouse boasts underground parking and features multiple terraces with views over the course, a lounge area, and top class restaurant for its members and visitors.
Ross Robertson, director of golf operations at The Elea adds: “For too long the international golf business has been focused on turning over numbers. At Elea we we want everyone, whether a golfer or not, to experience a real club, where everyone can feel at home.
"We also have a responsibility to serve the community in Cyprus as well as attracting visitors from overseas, so we're keen to develop a healthy membership, too."
The course is supported by the Elea Golf Academy with a full length driving range complete with target greens and bunkers, a short game practice area and a stunning putting green that commands an imposing location overlooking the entire estate.
