From the pro-shop…

James has been the PGA professional at Hunstanton for 12 years and cuts a very approachable and engaging figure in his well-stocked shop.

Happy to give you a few pointers, you’ll be wise to pick up his course guide, which is much more than just a yardage chart, as he outlines how to play each of the 18 holes.

It’s certainly £3 well spent. If, as is most likely, you’ve enjoyed your round, you’ll want to come away with a reminder of your day and £13 buys a smart cap to wear back at your own club.
The club…

Hunstanton cleverly combines a traditional feel with a modern approach. There are various meal-and-play offers to entice visitors, while this year sees country membership being reintroduced – £465 per year if you live more than 90 miles away as the crow flies, £650 for those beyond 65 miles.
Our impression was that it was a good members’ club – we noted an advert in the clubhouse offering £5 per person group coaching with the pro, which seems good value. There are plenty of roll-ups, including one for the Seniors each Tuesday.

The clubhouse…

The changing facilities have a slightly old-fashioned but pleasing feel to them – plum-coloured towels piled high for those using the showers, similar hand-towels stacked up by the sinks. As for the catering, it’s good value. A sausage sandwich is available for £2.95, while a pot of tea is just 80p.

After your round, you can tuck into a home-made chunk of Victoria sponge for £1.50 and wash it down with a pint of Adnams Ale. For those planning a longer stay, a South African sauvignon blanc will only set you back £11.95, while an Australian shiraz seems reasonably placed at £11.55.

Here’s the deal…

The green fees at Hunstanton aren’t cheap but pick your moment and there is definitely value to be had. Secretary Bob Carrick, a member since 1962, outlined that Sunday afternoons are quiet and £50, after 2pm, will buy a memorable round of golf, with the same offer applying on Saturdays, too. And this is a sensible club, so if there was still enough light around on a summer evening, chances are no one would bat an eye-lid if you struck out for a few extra holes.

In a nutshell…

Hunstanton is a two-ball course for singles and foursomes play. Four-ball play is only allowed on Tuesdays from 9.30am. Tee times must be reserved in advance. Check out www.hunstantongolfclub.com for details of green fees and meal/golf offers.
