Callum Shinkwin was left with a lie like he'd never seen before during the opening round of the Cyprus Open at Aphrodite Hills Golf Club on Thursday, when his drive down the final hole managed to land inside the lunch bag of one of the spotters, which contained a few cans of sparkling water.

This week's event at Aphrodite Hills is the first of back-to-back European Tour events in Cyprus, with the Cyprus Showdown to follow next week, a first of its kind scoring format that caused controversy amongst golf fans.

Shinkwin shot an opening round of 4-under par on Thursday, but the term "finding the water" had a whole new meaning for the Englishman down the 18th.

The 27-year-old hit his drive towards a tree in the rough, but when Shinkwin arrived at his ball, it was found inside a paper lunch bag that belonged to the spotter designated to the final hole. Take a look at some images from the European Tour Instagram page below:

You almost expected Shooter McGavin to emerge from the rough shouting "play it where it lies!" and Shinkwin did stop to take a pretend picture of him attempting to hit his ball out of the bag.

Shinkwin was able to take a free drop due to the unique incident and he managed to birdie the hole, his seventh of the day.
