Golf Datatech reveals average equipment purchase cycles

Golf Datatech’s 'Serious Golfer Shopping & Purchasing Habits Study', published roughly every two years, has revealed the consumer's average equipment purchasing cycle when it comes to buying drivers, irons, wedges and putters in the United States.

The survey tapped over 2,500 golfers from its database in the United States, surverying multiple demographics, golf handicap, gender, facility played, region and price points.

The respondent’s average handicap is 14 and plays an average of 64 rounds a year. The respondent’s average household income is about $145,000 a year.

This study is regarded as one of the industry's most signifcant indicators of what is going on at the heart of golf retail. The results came out as the following:

  • Drivers: changed every 4 years
  • Irons: changed every 5 years
  • Wedges: changed every 4 years
  • Putters: changed ever 6 years

Interestingly, the average respondent in the survey spends three months settling on an equipment purchase decision. It may be why smaller golf retail establishments may be doing well since a three-month buying decision often requires a relationship not just a location.

The survey also found that online shopping for golf equipment in the United States is up more than 50% year-over-year. Then again you would anticipate an increase in online sales given more than 100 golf shops on the ground in the United States have closed in the past year.

The 2017 Summer GPAU study will be available for purchase from Golf Datatech October 1.
