Matsuyama wins WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

Hideki Matsuyama tied the Firestone course record of 9-under 61 to run away with the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational by five strokes. 

Matsuyama, 25, started the day two strokes behind 54-hole leaders Thomas Pieters and Zach Johnson but he soon took full command of the tournament after reaching the turn in 30 shots. 

The world number three then birdied the 13th and despite a mini challenge from American duo Johnson and Charley Hoffman on the back nine, Matsuyama rolled home consecutive birdies at the 16th, 17th and 18th to seal his fifth PGA Tour title and second WGC victory.

Matsuyama has now won seven tournaments around the world since February 2016. 

Johnson finished five strokes back on 11-under with Hoffman back in third on 10-under, continuing his fine run of form following a runner-up at last week's Canadian Open.

Pieters failed to build on his solid opening three rounds and took fourth on 8-under, with Rory McIlroy in fifth on 7-under with Paul Casey, Russell Knox and Adam Hadwin.
