Jack Nicklaus believes Tiger Woods has got approximately 40 majors left in him to try and catch his record of 18 major titles.

Woods picked up his first PGA Tour title in more than five years with a two-stroke victory at the Tour Championship on Sunday, marking his 80th PGA Tour title and leaving him two wins away from Sam Snead's record of 82.

But when it comes to the majors, of which Woods currently owns 14, Nicklaus believes he has a genuine chance - if he can stay healthy - of at least matching the magic 18.

“Maybe Tiger’s got another 40 majors in him,” said Nicklaus. “Out of 40 majors, can he win five of them? Maybe. It depends on how much he wants to work at it.”

Reflecting on Woods’ Tour Championship win, Nicklaus, 78, said: “I thought it was very special. I saw a little bit of it, not a lot. I saw some of the shots Tiger hit and some of the swings he made and he looked pretty good.

“Nobody really challenged him and he played like the Tiger of old. And I’m very happy for him.”

Woods' last major victory came at the 2008 US Open in an 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines.

The 42-year-old has been installed as the early favourite for The Masters in April.
