Rory McIlroy has had a fantastic season, winning The Players Championship, the RBC Canadian Open, a four-shot victory at the Tour Championship and therefore the FedEx Cup, as well as 14 top 10's in 19 starts this season. A season so good, that he was voted by his peers as the PGA Player of the Year.
It may have come to a surprise to some people, with many believing that Brooks Koepka deserved the award after his phenemonal performances in the four majors this year, but there was no doubt it was a two-horse race between the two, in a vote that also included Matt Kuchar and Xander Schauffele.
"Why does Jack want to meet me for lunch? What does he need to talk about?" said a surprised McIlroy, reminiscing about the moment he was asked to join the 18-time major champion for lunch.
The lunch started with Nicklaus greeting McIlroy, before the two sat at a table, where staff began to bring trophies out and place them in front of the two golfing giants.
Nicklaus teased McIlroy by saying that it's something they always do for him and that they like to bring out trophies to remind him of his achievements.
McIlroy hadn't quite clocked on that they were actually bringing out the trophies that he had taken home that season and even when the Jack Nicklaus trophy was placed in front of him, the penny still hadn't dropped.
"I've got two of those," said McIlroy.
"Well now you've got three," replied Nicklaus.
Finally, McIlroy realised that he was the 2019 PGA Player of the Year and his reaction was brilliant. Check out the full video below:
