Charlie Woods' U.S. Junior Amateur dream ends in heartbreaking playoff defeat

Charlie Woods' run at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship ended in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday after he failed to secure one of the final two match play spots in a 14-for-2 playoff at Saucon Valley Country Club.

The 2026 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship began with a 264-player field competing over 36 holes of stroke play across Saucon Valley's Old and Grace Courses. 

The leading 64 players progressed to the knockout match play stages, but with 14 players tied for the final two qualifying places at 5-over par, an early-morning playoff was required to complete the bracket.

Woods, 17, teed off at 7:24am local time in the third playoff group and needed a birdie on the par-5 opening hole of the Grace Course to keep his hopes alive.

According to Golf Channel's Brentley Romine, Woods faced a lengthy birdie putt from the fringe but was unable to convert. 

With three other players already having made birdie, his hopes of reaching the match play stage were over.

USGA live scoring showed Woods went on to card a bogey six, bringing his championship to an end.

Eli Wessel and Hudson Kutchma went on to advance from the playoff after making birdies on the first extra hole and pars on the second extra hole.

Positives to take for Charlie Woods

Despite the disappointment, Woods can take plenty of positives from his week, especially since his T63 marked his best result in three U.S. Junior Amateur appearances. 

After opening with a 76 on the Old Course, the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods responded with a composed level-par 70 on the Grace Course on Tuesday – his lowest-ever round in the U.S. Junior Amateur – to force his way into Wednesday's playoff.

Only two of the 14 players tied on 5-over par could advance, making it one of the largest playoffs in recent championship history.

While Woods' impressive fightback was one of Tuesday's biggest talking points, his close friend and fellow Florida State commit Miles Russell surged into a share of the 36-hole lead after a brilliant 5-under 66 on the Old Course.

Russell finished at 6-under par alongside Brayden Jones and Sohan Patel, who both closed with rounds of 69, as the championship moved into its straight knockout match play phase.

Ranked seventh in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and recently selected for the 2026 United States Walker Cup team, Russell heads into the final stages among the favourites.

The U.S. Junior Amateur has long served as a launching pad for many of golf's biggest stars, with former champions including Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Brian Harman, David Duval, Johnny Miller and Will Zalatoris.

Tiger Woods remains the championship's most successful player after winning three consecutive titles between 1991 and 1993. 

In recognition of that achievement, the championship trophy is now known as the Tiger Woods Trophy.
