United States were beaten for the first time in 28 years when Sam Torrance holed his 22-footer on the 18th to beat Andy North.
The Scot, whose passion summed up the new European cause, held his arms aloft with tears flooding in an immortal pose that is remembered by European golf fans to this very day.
