DP World Tour winner to retire after this week's Danish Golf Championship

Alexander Björk will officially bring his professional golf career to an end this week when he makes his 179th and final DP World Tour appearance at the Danish Golf Championship.

The 36-year-old Swede announced his decision to retire almost 12 months ago, with Great Northern now providing the setting for the final chapter of a professional career that began in 2009.

Björk worked his way through the Nordic Golf League and Challenge Tour before earning his place on the DP World Tour in 2016.

His biggest moment came two years later when he claimed his first — and ultimately only — DP World Tour title at the 2018 Volvo China Open, beating Adrian Otaegui by one shot.

That victory also helped Björk reach a career-high 59th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

While a second victory proved elusive, the Swede enjoyed some excellent seasons on Tour, particularly in 2023 when nine top-10 finishes, including two runner-up results, helped him finish a career-best 11th in the Race to Dubai Rankings.

That form earned him the chance to compete on the PGA Tour in 2024, while he also made nine major championship appearances during his career.

His best major finish came at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, where he finished tied for 39th.

Björk has also won once on the Challenge Tour (now the HotelPlanner Tour) and twice on the Nordic Golf League, while accumulating more than €7.5 million in career earnings since graduating from the lower tiers of the professional game. 

Despite still being capable of competing at the highest level, Björk decided that the demands of professional golf were no longer compatible with the life he wanted away from the course.

In particular, he wanted to spend more time with his wife and children after years of travelling the world.

"I thought I was away too much from the family," Björk told the DP World Tour.

"I wanted to spend more time with my kids and my wife and I think that in the end made the joy for golf a little less as well."

Björk admitted that he would have liked to win more than once on the DP World Tour, but insists he remains proud of everything he achieved.

He has also had the past year to reflect on his decision and says he has no regrets about walking away.

"I felt that for me the only decision was to stop playing and I'm happy with that decision," he said.

"I've not regretted it so far the year I've been away, so it feels good at the moment."

Björk's decision was entirely his own, and that appears to be an important part of his retirement.

"It's completely my own decision and that feels good to be able to take that decision," he added.

"I'm really happy with the career I had."

Now, as he prepares for his final DP World Tour appearance in Denmark, Björk can close the door on a 17-year professional career knowing he reached the highest levels of the game.

There may be aspects of professional golf he will miss, but for Björk, the opportunity to spend more time with his family ultimately proved more important than chasing another victory.
