Eugenio Chacarra facing DP World Tour warning after shocking clash with former caddie

Eugenio Chacarra is set to be warned by the DP World Tour following a heated confrontation involving his former caddie at last week's Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

The incident, first reported by Telegraph Sport's James Corrigan, is understood to have taken place shortly after Sunday's final round at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, with security personnel forced to intervene.

Chacarra, one of the standout performers on the DP World Tour this season, reportedly became involved in an "angry confrontation" with Adolfo Juan Luna, the caddie who was on his bag when the Spaniard won his breakthrough LIV Golf title in Bangkok in 2022.

Luna is now working for fellow Spaniard Angel Ayora, who was playing in the same group as Chacarra during the final round of the Omega European Masters.

Chacarra and Ayora were joined by Nacho Elvira in the penultimate three-ball on Sunday and, according to Telegraph Sport, the confrontation erupted after the group had completed play on the 18th hole.

While attention was focused on the closing stages of the tournament, the incident unfolded away from the main action on the practice putting green behind the 18th.

The situation became serious enough for tournament security to step in and separate those involved.

Footage circulating on Reddit appears to show the aftermath of the confrontation, with Chacarra shouting that he had been hit during the incident.

The account that posted the video (watch below) claimed police officers were also involved, although the DPWT maintains officers were already in the area and had not been specifically called in to deal with things.

A DP World Tour spokesperson has since confirmed to Telegraph Sport that officials were aware of the incident and that those involved would be spoken to.

"We are aware of an incident on the practice putting green towards the conclusion of Sunday's Omega European Masters," the spokesperson said.

"The confrontation involved a player, a caddie and associates of both parties but the incident was quickly dispersed by tournament officials and security personnel.

"All those involved will be spoken to and reminded about their future conduct."

According to the Telegraph's report, there has been a longstanding disagreement between Chacarra and Luna, with sources claiming there has been bad blood between the pair over a dispute relating to money.

Luna was Chacarra's caddie during the Spaniard's LIV Golf victory in Bangkok in October 2022, when the 26-year-old claimed the tournament's $4 million first prize.

Chacarra used to represent Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC but his contract was not renewed at the end of 2024. 

Luna, a former journalist, is also expected to be spoken to by DP World Tour officials regarding the altercation in Switzerland.

Neither Chacarra nor Ayora's camp have publicly commented on the incident at the time of publication. 

The episode has created an unexpected subplot at a crucial stage of the DP World Tour season, particularly given the remarkable season Chacarra has enjoyed on the course.

The Spaniard has put together the best campaign of his professional career, winning the KLM Open and Italian Open in successive starts earlier this summer.

He has also recorded a runner-up finish at the Hero Indian Open and continued his excellent form at the Omega European Masters, where he finished tied for fourth.

Those results have propelled Chacarra to a career-high 57th in the Official World Golf Ranking and into third place in the DP World Tour Rankings.

As things stand, he is in a commanding position to secure one of the 10 coveted PGA Tour cards available for 2027.

It's also fair to say on current form that Chacarra has every chance of qualifying for Luke Donald's 2027 European Ryder Cup team at Adare Manor as well. 

Ayora, meanwhile, is still searching for his maiden DP World Tour title.

The 21-year-old Spaniard is currently ranked 17th in the DP World Tour Rankings and, unlike Chacarra, sits outside the positions that would currently secure him a PGA Tour card.

Chacarra and Ayora are both competing in this week's Amgen Irish Open, and unsurprisingly have not been paired together for the opening two rounds at Trump Doonbeg. 

They have also been placed on opposite sides of the draw.

The DP World Tour has confirmed it intends to address what happened in Switzerland ahead of the Irish Open starting on Thursday. 

Rory McIlroy headlines this week's tournament on home soil, with LIV Golf teammates Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton also in the field.
