Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will return to the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January as he bids to claim a record-extending fifth Dallah Trophy following another remarkable year for the Northern Irishman.

The six-time major champion will tee it up at Emirates Golf Club from 21–24 January 2027, having confirmed his participation in the DP World Tour’s opening Rolex Series event of the new year.

It will also mark the first tournament of McIlroy's 2027 campaign.

McIlroy’s latest schedule announcement comes just 24 hours after he finished in a disappointing tie for 42nd at the DP World India Championship, where Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra claimed his third DP World Tour title of the season to move to the top of the Race to Dubai standings.

With just three events remaining in the season, McIlroy now faces a battle to secure an eighth Race to Dubai title and equal Colin Montgomerie’s record haul.

Chacarra has accumulated more than 4,000 points and holds an advantage of approximately 600 over Patrick Reed in second, with McIlroy a further 300 points behind the American in third.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a superb campaign and he has already secured his PGA Tour card for 2027.

However, McIlroy remains firmly in contention to finish the season on top of the DP World Tour rankings, with the Abu Dhabi Championship and DP World Tour Championship set to decide the destination of the Harry Vardon Trophy next month.

Despite his recent result in India, McIlroy will head into the final weeks of the campaign having enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his career.

He successfully defended his Masters title at Augusta National in April, becoming just the fourth player to win consecutive green jackets after Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.

The victory also moved him level with Faldo on six major titles.

McIlroy's return to Dubai will provide another opportunity to add to an already impressive record at Emirates Golf Club.

McIlroy made his Hero Dubai Desert Classic debut as a 16-year-old amateur in 2006 and claimed his first professional victory at the venue three years later, aged just 19.

He subsequently lifted the Dallah Trophy in 2015, 2023 and 2024, establishing himself as the most successful player in the tournament’s history. A fifth victory in 2027 would extend that record further.

“It’s been another incredible year, and to win the Masters again, this time with my parents there to share it with me, was very special. A memory I’ll cherish forever,” McIlroy said.

“I love coming to Dubai and the UAE, and I've always considered Dubai a second home. It's where my professional career really started, and the Hero Dubai Desert Classic will always mean a lot to me.

“The support from the fans at Emirates Golf Club is always incredible, and I can't think of a better place to start the year.”

Simon Corkill, executive tournament director of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, welcomed McIlroy’s return, describing his participation as an ideal way to launch the tournament’s 38th edition.

“We never take Rory's participation for granted, and to have him return as a back-to-back Masters champion is the perfect way to launch our 38th edition,” Corkill said.

The tournament will also offer an expanded off-course experience, including Rooftop18, an enlarged Dallah Lounge and additional entertainment, food and family activities in Tournament Town.

Tickets for the 2027 Hero Dubai Desert Classic are on sale now. General admission remains free on Thursday and Friday with a registered ticket, while early-bird weekend tickets are available for AED 85. Prices will rise to AED 110 before the event and AED 135 on the day.

Children aged 17 and under, along with companions and carers, will be admitted free of charge across all four days.
