Wife makes hilarious Masters ticket mistake — and husband ends up with chance to attend The Open

There are few tickets in golf more coveted than those for The Masters at Augusta National, so one wife thought she had found the perfect way to surprise her husband.

Unfortunately, she entered the wrong ticket ballot.

After overhearing her husband talking about The Masters, she secretly applied for tickets, only to discover that she had actually entered the ballot for The Open.

And then she was successful.

While The Masters remains the ultimate bucket-list ticket for many golf fans, the consolation prize is hardly a bad one: the opportunity to buy tickets for the 155th Open at the Old Course at St Andrews in 2027.

The hilarious story was shared on Reddit by user cfram03, who explained that his wife had entered the ticket ballot without his knowledge.

“She applied for the lottery without my knowledge because she overheard me talking about The Masters,” he wrote.

His wife then walked into his office to reveal the news — apparently unaware that she had entered the ballot for the wrong tournament.

“She just walked into my office and showed me she won tix to The Open 2027, having no idea where it even takes place... it’s at St Andrews next year.”

The husband has subsequently discovered that he now has the opportunity to secure tickets for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of Open week, with four tickets available for each day.

That means he could potentially land 16 tickets to one of the biggest events in golf.

“I literally didn’t have this in any sort of plans lol,” he admitted.

The unexpected opportunity has now left him considering what to do with the tickets, including the possibility of turning the surprise into a trip with his friends.

“Should I take advantage of the random luck and make a boys trip out of this?” he asked the Reddit community.

He was also quick to clarify that the idea of a boys' trip had actually come from his wife and was not a concrete decision he had already made.

“EDIT: the boys trip was a comment from her, not a concrete decision. Lots of judgy incredible husbands in this sub!”

While he may have missed out on his original dream of heading to The Masters, there can be few better alternatives than an Open at the Home of Golf. 

Becoming a patron at Augusta National may well be the bigger prize for most golf fans, but watching the world's best players compete for the Claret Jug on the famed Old Course at St Andrews remains a bucket-list experience.

So, what began as a thoughtful attempt to surprise her husband with a trip to Georgia has instead given him the opportunity to attend one of golf's biggest championships in Scotland — potentially with a group of his pals.
