Brian Rolapp sends crystal clear message to LIV Golf stars seeking PGA Tour return

The PGA Tour has no immediate plans to revive its Returning Member Program, but CEO Brian Rolapp has made it clear that LIV Golf players are not necessarily locked out of a return.

Speaking ahead of this week's Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, Rolapp addressed the possibility of LIV Golf players making their way back to the PGA Tour as the sport continues to grapple with an uncertain future for the Saudi-backed league.

Rolapp confirmed there is currently no new Returning Member Program in the works, following the scheme that allowed five-time major champion Brooks Koepka to return earlier this season. Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith were also offered routes back under the program.

But with questions surrounding what LIV Golf's next chapter will look like, the issue of player eligibility could become increasingly important.

Rolapp insisted that any future returnees would have to earn their place.

“The PGA Tour is built on meritocracy,” Rolapp said.

“Every player, whether they're already here or they're trying to be here, they're going to earn a place based on their performance and on their success.”

He also stressed that the Tour's rules would remain central to any decision.

The PGA Tour is a membership organisation, Rolapp explained, meaning players must abide by its regulations. 

Just as importantly, those rules must be enforced.

That could make any potential comeback considerably less straightforward than simply welcoming LIV's biggest stars back into the fold.

Rahm and DeChambeau remain among the most recognisable and talented players in world golf, and their return would undoubtedly strengthen the PGA Tour's product. 

However, Rolapp suggested that past decisions to join LIV would not simply be forgotten.

For LIV players considering a return, there is another important condition: they must first prove they are completely free of their contractual obligations to the league.

That was a key part of Koepka's return, and Rolapp said the same principle would apply to others.

“Anyone who's interested in coming to the PGA Tour needs to demonstrate that they are relieved of their contractual commitments or any tail obligations they might have in that legacy model,” confirmed Rolapp. 

So while Rolapp has not closed the door on LIV players returning, there is unlikely to be a red carpet waiting for them.

For now, the message from the PGA Tour is simple: earn your place, follow the rules and arrive without contractual strings attached.
