The PGA Tour's Greensboro-area tournament has announced Raymond James, a financial services company, as the new title sponsor from 2027.

This multi-year agreement means the tournament will be contested as a full-field event in August 2027 at Sedgefield Country Club, before being contested as part of the PGA Tour Championship Series starting in 2028.

The Greensboro-area event has been a mainstay on the PGA Tour schedule since its inception in 1938.

"The PGA Tour's Greensboro event has one of the richest histories in men’s professional golf, and we are proud to continue building on its longstanding legacy and local charitable impact with the support of our new partners at Raymond James," said Dhruv Prasad, the PGA Tour's chief commercial officer.

"Greensboro has supported the PGA Tour for nearly nine decades, and we are excited to launch this new chapter by bringing the best players in the world to the Piedmont Triad region."

The PGA Tour is going through a major changes in 2028, splitting into two tiers: the Championship Series and Challenger Series.

There will be 23-24 Championship Series events which feature the best players on the PGA Tour, including the Players Championship, all four majors and international team events such as the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup, depending on the year.

Five events in the Championship Series have since been announced, which include the Cadillac Championship, Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Sentry, Travelers Championship and a new tournament that will feature insurance and financial services company, Sompo, as title sponsor.

Promotion and relegation will be major features of the new two-tiered system, with the full schedule for the 2028 season expected to be released early next year.

What of FedEx, however?

This radical shakeup of the Tour has many wondering whether FedEx’s relationship with the PGA Tour and the status of the FedEx St. Jude Championship are in jeopardy.

Memphis was excluded from the top-tier Championship Series, which leaves more questions than answers.

According to Front Office Sports, it appears as though FedEx may not continue as the sole naming-rights sponsor of the season-long points race after the 2027 season.

As such, this week could mark the penultimate FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind, as further discussions are set to take place between the Tour and FedEx.
