Catalonia stands separate from the rest of Spain in more ways than one.

Beyond the defiantly independent Catalan culture, language and cuisine, the area surrounding Barcelona is also one of Spain's most underrated golfing hot spots.

While it's courses perhaps don't carry quite the world-famous glamour you'll find in places like Valderrama or Sotogrande, there are more than enough picturesque tracks to make a golfing holiday to North Eastern Spain well worth the trip – as evidenced by the DP World Tour's annual stop in the region for the Catalunya Open. Easily reachable by plane via Barcelona airport and with both Vineyards and the beaches of the Costa Brava on its doorstep, there's also plenty here to keep you going well after your 18 holes have finished.

Here, then, we're rounding up the very best places to tee off around Catalonia and the Costa Brava, starting of course with the shining jewel in the area's golfing crown.

Camiral Resort (Stadium & Tour)

Location: Girona

Green fees (weekday): €230 (Stadium), €144 (Tour)

Camiral Golf and Wellness is far more than a pair of golf courses. Owned and operated by the team that provided Portugal with Quinta da Lago, Camiral was built in the late '90s with the express purpose of giving both Spain and Europe a course worthy of rivalling the US's most renowned Stadium courses.

It's safe to say they've succeeded, with Camiral's flagship Stadium Course regularly named among Europe's best courses and, in the ultimate show of recognition, being awarded hosting rights for the 2031 Ryder Cup.

While the Stadium course with its ample water and island greens is the showpiece, the shorter, more open and more accessible Tour course is also well worth a visit. The five-star resort that also rests on the property is among Spain's best, solidifying Camiral as perhaps the nation's most prestigious place for a golfing getaway.

Real Club de Golf El Prat (Pink & Yellow)

Location: Terrassa, Barcelona

Green fees (weekday): €195 (Pink), €185 (Yellow)

Perhaps Barcelona's most exclusive and celebrated country club, Real El Prat boasts two fearsome courses, the Pink and Yellow, both of which have been awarded Spanish Open hosting duties on multiple occasions. Real El Prat was founded in the '50s, however it moved to its current location in the late '90s, acquiring a sizeable plot of land on which Greg Norman was called upon to build two championship-class courses.

Norman's creations were revered at the time as among the most fearsome in Spain, with undulating and challenging green complexes made all the tougher by their tight parkland layout.

The Yellow was renovated and softened somewhat towards the end of last decade, however, making the two courses complement each other far more effectively, while the Pink (or Open) course is still imposing, measuring more than 7,300 yards when stretched to its max capacity. It'll take centre stage in 2026 as host of the DP World Tour's Catalunya Open.

Infinitum (Hills & Lakes)

Location: Tarragona, Costa Dorada

Green fees (weekday): €142 (Lakes)

Located a short drive south of Barcelona on Catalonia's Costa Dorada (Golden Coast), Infinitum is an all-encompassing hideaway offering world-class accommodation and a golf development centre that's the envy of Europe, comprising 45 holes Greg Norman-designed holes spanning 750 acres.

Infinitum plays an important role in fostering golf talent from all across Europe, its ocean-facing Hills course serving as the host for the last stage of the European Tour Q School, while its other main course, the links-style Lakes course offering a markedly different sort of challenge without compromising its beachside allure. The  9-hole Ruins course, set among the remains of a township dated back to the 2nd century BC, is the cherry on top and was named Europe's best 9-hole course at the 2024 World Golf Awards.

Empordà Golf Club (Forest & Dunes)

Location: Gualta, Costa Brava

Green fees (weekday): €125 (Forest), €125 (Dunes)

Offering one of the most varied duelling challenges to be found in any of Spain's myriad golf resorts, Empordà is a fairly recent addition to the region's list of golfing hot spots, having finished construction in the late '80s. Now fully matured, Empordà comprises four separate loops of nine, all designed by Texan Robert von Hagge, which are most commonly combined into two routes, known as the Forest and the Dunes.

As the name implies, the Forest is a tight, twisting parkland track that winds its way through a dense and picturesque pine forest, while the Dunes is open and reminiscent of British Links courses, with the added hazard of water laced throughout its rugged, undulating layout.

Fontanals Golf Club

Location: Fontanals de Cerdanya, Girona

Green fees (weekday): €87

Nestled in a picturesque valley amid the foothills of the Pyrenees, Fontanals is out of the way and sits at more than 1,000m above sea level but well worth the visit. This gently undulating parkland track is open, playable, entertaining and framed pretty much the entire way around by incredible mountain backdrops. A historic irrigation channel flows through multiple holes, adding to the challenge and creating plenty of water hazards that feel refreshingly natural.

It's now become one of the most celebrated courses in the region, and routinely plays host to the second stage of European Tour Q School.
