Iona Stephen reveals the highs, lows and unexpected turns of her career in new GolfMagic podcast Her Game

GolfMagic has officially launched ‘Her Game’, a brand-new weekly podcast celebrating the women shaping and inspiring the modern golf industry.

Presented by GolfMagic’s very own Georgina Black, the series will feature conversations with players, broadcasters, creators, leaders and personalities from across the game.

For our first episode, which you can watch in full at the bottom of this page, Black sat down with Sky Sports Golf presenter and Husqvarna brand ambassador Iona Stephen at the AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The pair discussed Stephen’s unconventional route into golf, her ambitions of becoming a professional, the injury that changed the direction of her career and her subsequent rise as one of the most recognisable broadcasters in the game.

Moments after sitting down with Black for interview, Stephen admitted being the interviewee felt somewhat unfamiliar territory. 

“Normally I’m in your seat and I’m getting to ask the questions, and rarely I’m on the other end of things,” Stephen said with a smile. 

Despite not taking up golf until later in life, Stephen’s progression was remarkable. 

After discovering the game at university, the Scot quickly fell in love with the sport and eventually reached a plus-four handicap before turning professional.

An injury ultimately ended her playing ambitions, although Stephen revealed that the dream has never completely disappeared.

“In another life, I’d love to be a professional golfer,” admitted the 34-year-old. 

Instead, she found a new route into the game through broadcasting, taking her around the world and giving viewers an insight into professional golf from a very different perspective.

But, as Stephen explained, there is considerably more to live television than viewers see on screen.

“There’s a hell of a lot going on that the viewer never really is aware of.”

She also recalled one particularly memorable broadcasting mishap, when she accidentally referred to former World No.1 Dustin Johnson as “Justin Johnson”.

For Stephen, being able to handle the unexpected is all part of the job. 

“A spaceship could land, and I will handle this,” she said of constantly being on the pulse.

Beyond her career, Stephen also spoke passionately about why golf matters, describing the game as a source of sanctuary, confidence, friendship and genuine connection.

She also discussed the continued growth of women’s golf and the importance of meaningful investment from commercial partners.

“There are plenty of brands getting involved in women’s golf now and it’s wonderful to see, but you want to be working closely with brands that put their money where their mouth is.”

While acknowledging huge progress is being made in the women's game, Stephen was equally clear that there is still work to do.

“It's come a long way in the last year, in the last five years, but we've still got a long way to go.”

That combination of honesty, humour and insight is exactly what GolfMagic hopes Her Game will bring to readers and viewers each week, and there is plenty more to come.
