Mickelson spotted using nine-year-old club

Callaway staffer dusted off his old, trusty Titleist 980F to finish in a tie for second at BMW Championship

Mickelson spotted using nine-year-old club

Notice anything different about Phil Mickelson at the BMW Championship?

‘He was wielding the claw grip, obviously,’ we hear assertively through your screen.

Correct, and…

Having tested just about every tool in his garage in recent years, you probably won’t be surprised to learn Lefty was found dusting off a nine-year-old Titleist 980F 5-wood with a Graphite Design PM 902 shaft at Crooked Stick.

The Callaway staffer, who finished in a tie for second behind Rory McIlroy, did, however, continue using his Callaway RAZR Fit driver and Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Octane 3-wood.

Titleist’s 980F line of fairway woods debuted in 2003 when Mickelson was a Titleist staff player.

It’s not unusual for pros to switch back to old, trusty fairway woods. Tiger Woods uses the Nike SasQuatch II 5-wood, which was released in 2007, while Geoff Ogilvy plays a Cobra S9-1 5-wood that dates back three years.
