McIlroy against grouping top players together on PGA Tour
McIlroy says supergroups impact best players due to added attention.
Rory McIlroy has criticised the PGA Tour for grouping the best players together on Thursday and Friday - ahead of teeing off with Dustin Johnson and Jason Day today at Memorial today.
The Northern Irishman said the added attention sometimes has an adverse impact on the superstars, and therefore limits their ability to be in the later tee times come the weekend.
“I mean I don’t mind playing with the top guys in the first two days, but the objective is to get those top guys in contention on Sunday..." McIlroy said.
"But I get why they’re doing it, and I get why it creates a bit of a buzz at the start of the week. But I would rather see Rickie and Phil and Tiger play on a Sunday rather than on a Thursday and two of them going home.
"There's just so much buzz and hype around the group on a Thursday or Friday when there doesn't really need to be," McIlroy said. "And that could affect some players."
The PGA Tour sells online packages to golf fans allowing them to watch the star groups.
