Andy Sullivan said the coronavirus pandemic helped him realise his mistakes on the golf course, branding himself an "idiot", but he is now refocused and relishing his time on the golf course, following another strong finish to a tournament on the European Tour.

The Englishman went into Sunday's final round at Wentworth seven strokes behind the lead, but shot the lowest round of the day with a sensational 65, that included eight birdies and just one bogey as he climbed the leaderboard to finish in a tie for third with Race to Dubau leader Patrick Reed.

Currently 90th in the World Rankings, Sullivan threatened the lead during Sunday's action, but a few costly errors left him with too much to do, as eventual winner Tyrrell Hatton went on to claim a third Rolex Series title.

"I thought I had to do something extraordinary today," Sullivan said following his final round on Sunday. "Felt quite close to doing that at some points today. Unfortunately, just a few too many behind to catch up."

Sullivan's form has vastly improved in recent months and the four-time European Tour winner says that the coronavirus pandemic helped him put things into perspective.

"I think it took a world pandemic for me to realise how much of an idiot I've been on the golf course," added the 34-year-old. "It actually puts a lot of things into perspective. I really enjoyed being at home with the family and spending time with them and there's a lot worse things to be doing than being on a golf course.

"Just find myself getting on with it and rededicating myself to the game and giving it my best efforts. It's easy to enjoy when you're shooting 65, I'm not going to lie. I have been having a lot of fun recently and I think it's shown in the golf as well."
