High Legh Park gets on board with pioneering new format

Cheshire club embraces PowerPlay

There might have been a mixed reception over last’s week inaugural PowerPlay event at Celtic Manor - but try telling that to High Legh Park Golf Club.

The Knutsford club was so impressed by last Monday’s action in Wales, which saw Caroline Hedwall beat 11 other stars from across worldwide tours including Gary Player and Ian Poulter, that it has announced three of its scheduled Open tournaments will incorporate a trial of the new PowerPlay format.

“PowerPlay is potentially one of the most exciting things to happen to golfing competitions for the last 50 years,” said High Legh Park director Martin Cooper.

“Not since the introduction of Stableford has a new idea caught the imagination like this, just like Twenty20 in cricket, PowerPlay encourages attacking golf and that is great for club as well as professional golfers.

“It’s a highly tactical game with a big risk and reward element. The competitions will give members from other clubs the chance to experience the new format first hand as well as some of our own members who can’t wait to try this new golfing experience.”

Traditionally a nine-hole format, PowerPlay sees golfers aim at a white flag or the risk-reward black PowerPlay flag, which can be used three times for extra points.

The Mixed Open will tee off on July 10, the Ladies Open on July 19 and the Seniors Open on August 4. For more details and an application form visit www.highleghpark.com or call 01565 830888.
