Westwood claims China Golf Challenge
World No.2 birdies first extra hole to win inaugural seven-day, seven-city event
Lee Westwood continued his love affair with Asia by claiming the inaugural China Golf Challenge after playoff joy against home-favourite Liang Wen-chong.
Westwood and Liang parred both of the day’s two holes at Caesars Golf in Macau to record an 18-hole total of 2-under, before the World No.2 poured home a clutch 12-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole.
“I think I do well in Asia because I just adapt well,” said the 38-year-old from Worksop.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing with Liang this week. I know him as I’ve played with him many times, but this week we’ve been living in each other’s pockets and spending a lot of time together, so you get to learn a bit more.”
Ian Poulter birdied the par-4 18th to move one behind, while Rory McIlroy finished 6-over.
Since Monday, the players have competed at Tomson Golf Club in Shanghai, Jinsha Lake Golf Club in Zhengzhou, Topwin Golf and Country Club and Jade Island International Golf Club in Beijing, the 36-hole Red Flag Valley in Dalian, Sun Kingdom Golf Club in Chongqing and Long Island Golf and Country Club in Dongguan.
