Golf club in North west England causes outrage with harsh ruling

A golf club is a place of community, banter and fun. Thousands of people up and down the country play at their local golf courses for the love of the game.

However, as we have all experienced in the past, golf clubs and golf club members can be very particular about rules and regulations which can cause outrage.

This was evident recently at Stockport Golf Club near Manchester in the North west of England. The club ran a standard four-ball better-ball Stableford last weekend.

The winning scores were 38, 37 and 36 points. These are normal winning scores of a Stableford which you wouldn't consider as unusual. But the winner's ceremony was very unusual.

The golf club awarded first prize to Alex Brown and Andrew Given, who carded lower scores than the actual winners. This is when the controversy started.

You will be asking: why weren't the best scorers given first prize? This is is because Alex and Andrew turned up to the prize presentation and the winners didn't.

Andy Hutchinson and David Williams were due to receive the first prize and Jon Worsnop and Huw Anthony got the second-best score. But neither of these teams attended the winner's ceremony and Alex and Andrew did.

The tweet from Stockport Golf Club (@SGCGentsComps) has now been deleted but it did read: "It just shows how important it is to attend presentations."

The club has also deleted their club competition Twitter account off the back of the incident. It seems the decision caused quite a backlash.

There hasn't been any comment from the players on social media as far as we are aware, but the real winners won't be pleased with this ruling.
