Tiger Woods may have narrowly failed in his bid to win a fourth Open Championship earlier this summer, but he has landed on his fairway bunker shot on the 10th hole in the final round as his golf shot of the season.

Woods, 42, won the Tour Championship in September to mark his first win in more than five years and it was also one of seven top-10 finishes in 18 starts on the PGA Tour in 2018.

The former world number one went close at the Valspar Championship with a runner-up finish, and again at the US PGA Championship in August when chasing the tail of Brooks Koepka.

"The shot I hit down 10 at the Open Championship out of that bunker," Woods told Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press.

"I thought that, 'This is the tournament. I win the Open Championship or I lose the Open Championship on this shot.’ If it clips the bunker, I lose. If it comes out, I’m going to go ahead and win this thing.

"You saw the speed I put into it and the shot I hit. To be able to pull that off knowing that I hadn’t done this for a very long time and this is the moment. That gave me a lot of confidence going forward."

The shot sent golf fans into a frenzy on social media, not just because of the quality of the strike, but more so because of the VINTAGE TIGER RECOIL...

Unfortunately Woods failed to convert the birdie putt and he would go on to double bogey the next and bogey the 12th to fall out of contention, as his playing partner Francesco Molinari steadily breezed past him to the finishing line for his maiden major title.
