Pros
Cons

I've always had a soft spot for the company's clubs because it has consistently produces golf equipment that generates confidence and delivers consistency. Even if you're having a bad day on the course you shrug it off because you know the tools are not to blame - they're solid and forgiving and engineered to offer help even though you're tending to ignore it.

The combination of a wide sole and deep centre of gravity cut down the miss-hits and get the ball airborne while weight pads in the toe and heel have a role to play in keep the head stable at impact.

The oversize head and deep cavity, have an X-factor reminiscent of Callaway's earlier creations but without the exaggerated offset.

Benross sent me the 6- and 8-iron to sample and both generated plenty of height and stop and well as consistency of moderate distance (150 and 130 yards respectively for me).

And I really appreciated the pitching wedge, particularly for short shots around the green, the combination of thin face and cavity back made those delicate chips run straight and true like a long, well struck putt.

Verdict

Available in a 5-iron to PW set - with a 4-iron option - these Innovator X irons have the added attraction of an excellent Aldila DVi shaft - certainly worth the extra 50 quid on the standard Concept Steel-shaft version (£249).
