Not the sleekest clubs of all time; lots of offset on the hybrid is a bit off-putting; putter grip is a little thin

Verdict

Without question the best budget package set for men we have seen for quite some time at a very reasonable £369.

While you don't quite get a full set of irons at 6-SW, you do get a hybrid to cover that middle ground between the fairway wood and driver.

Each of the irons were particularly forgiving and very easy to get airborne, but in the words of Roy Keane, that is their job.

The top lines are pretty thick but that is to be expected for a budget set of maximum game improvement irons.

The driver comes in at 13 degrees, which is a little higher than your typical 9 or 10.5 degree models on the market, but it certainly helps get you airborne if you struggle to get the ball off the tee.

You'll still hit the ball pretty far with the driver, as too with the fairway wood at 18 degrees, a club we found very easy to strike nicely off a tee peg or fairway lie.

There is quite a bit of offset on the hybrid in 24 degrees, which might put some of you off, but to be honest for the golf beginner this is exactly what you want in order to help you with your ball striking. If you need help, offset can be your friend.

Offset is where the neck or hosel of the head is positioned in front of the face of the clubhead, so that the clubface appears to be set back a little from the neck of the club.

Overall, they might not be the sleekest clubs in the world but they each do the business for a player seeking game improvement performance.

And to be frank, if you are beginner who is just looking to enjoy the game and ease your way in without paying full whack on new premium clubs from the likes of TaylorMade, Callaway and PING, the CG3000 set is the perfect alternative for you.

A great set for someone who is spending quite a bit of money on lessons at the moment, or simply for someone who just wants to have a friendly knock with pals every now and then this season.

We also thought the putter was very reasonable, and we even tested it out against a premium Bettinardi putter which you can watch in the video above.

The only downside on the putter for us was the pretty thin putter grip, and the feel was not quite as strong as a more premium flatstick. However, it looks great and instils plenty of confidence over the ball as it frames the ball nicely.

The stand bag is also particularly sturdy and looks great. It also has plenty of space for all your accessories, which adds to its appeal.

A superb offering from MacGregor and terrific value for money for the golf beginner.

Once you've got a little better, only then would we recommend you change into a more premium set.
