Former LIV Golf recruit Eugenio Chacarra will take a two-shot lead into a marathon final day at the DP World India Championship.

A five-hour lightning delay on the opening day has left tournament officials scrambling to catch up at New Delhi Golf Club, with fading light forcing Chacarra to suspend his round at 5.44pm local time with seven holes still to play.

The Spaniard reached 14-under par after making nine birdies, having opened with consecutive rounds of 67.

Chacarra is seeking to close the gap on Patrick Reed in the Race to Dubai standings.

Victory would see the 26-year-old move ahead of the former Masters champion in the order of merit ahead of the two season-ending playoff events in the Middle East next month.

Reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy is third in the standings and will bid to match Colin Montgomerie's record of eight Harry Vardon Trophies next month in the Middle East.

But the 37-year-old is struggling here and is 10 strokes adrift of the lead.

Chacarra's compatriot Angel Hidalgo and Dutchman Joost Luiten are his closest challengers on 12-under par, while Scotland's Scott Jamieson and recent winner Adrian Meronk are also in contention.

Reflecting on his battle with McIlroy and Reed, Chacarra said: "Obviously, they're the best, two of the best players in the world, so for me to compete with them I need to bring my A-game, like I said, and I'm trying to do that.

"My team and myself are putting all we can to contend in Dubai. Obviously, I need to get points, have some good weeks because those guys, they never rest."

He added: "I just play to win, you know. I love winning. I love being in contention on Sunday.

"That's what I play every week for — to have a chance to win the tournament over the last nine holes on Sunday.

"But, yeah, I like where I'm at. I like where my game is. I need to control what I can control, and that's my target for the next couple of rounds."
