Rory McIlroy makes expected Abu Dhabi announcement with Race to Dubai title in sight

Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will return to the Abu Dhabi Championship in November as he targets a joint-record eighth Race to Dubai title, with the DP World Tour insisting its season-ending Playoffs remain on course to take place in the UAE.

McIlroy will tee it up at Yas Links from November 5-8, before the Race to Dubai reaches its climax at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai the following week.

The six-time major champion is chasing a piece of European Tour history as he looks to equal Colin Montgomerie's record haul of eight Order of Merit titles.

McIlroy is currently around 300 points behind leader Patrick Reed, who is looking to win the Race to Dubai for the first time in his career.

However, Reed is currently dealing with a wrist injury and his upcoming schedule remains unknown, potentially giving McIlroy an opportunity to close the gap during the final events of the season.

Reed was due to compete in this week's Dunhill Links but the American has been forced to withdraw. 

McIlroy's next appearance will come at the DP World India Championship from October 15-18, before he turns his attention to the Middle East and the DP World Tour Playoffs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

His confirmation comes against a backdrop of ongoing conflict in the region, with some players havroing expressed concerns about travelling to the UAE.

Matt Fitzpatrick, who won his fourth title of the season at last week's French Open, has made it clear that he is not particularly comfortable with travelling to the region at present.

Despite those concerns, DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings has confirmed that the plan remains to stage both playoff events in the UAE.

Speaking to Sky Sports at the BMW PGA at Wentworth two weeks ago, Kinnings said: “The reality is we expect every intention to be playing in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

“Work has started and we're building stuff at Yas Links and at the Jumeirah Golf Estates, so our intention is to go ahead.

“We clearly need to keep in touch with travel advisors and other people who help with us, but our plan is definitely to play the Playoffs in the UAE.”

The Abu Dhabi Championship will feature the leading 70 available players on the Race to Dubai Rankings, with the top 50 then progressing to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The 2026 Abu Dhabi Championship has also been given a new title partner, with Abu Dhabi-based property company Aldar taking over the naming rights.

Aldar has been an official marketing and real estate partner of the DP World Tour since 2025 and owns Yas Links, which has hosted the Abu Dhabi Championship since 2022.

McIlroy has enjoyed plenty of success at Yas Links but is still searching for his first victory in the tournament, having finished runner-up four times.

“The Abu Dhabi Championship is always one of the tournaments I look forward to, and it’s great to see Aldar come on board as the new title partner,” McIlroy said.

“Abu Dhabi is a fantastic place to visit, Yas Links is always in immaculate condition, and the atmosphere throughout the week makes it a special event.

“I’ve finished runner-up here four times, so I’d obviously love to go one better and finally win it. I really enjoy finishing my season in the UAE, and hopefully I can have a strong week and put myself in a position to win another Race to Dubai title.”
