Ryan Fox produces electric finish to win The Open at Royal Birkdale
Ryan Fox produced the shot of his life on the 72nd hole of The Open to claim his first major championship title and break Cameron Young's heart.
The 39-year-old, from New Zealand, entered the 18th needing a par to force a sudden-death with the American or a birdie to win the Claret Jug.
Fox produced a moment of magic, hitting a towering iron shot from 172 yards to 11 feet and rolling in the putt to spark wild scenes.
He finished on total of 10-under, one clear of Young who had earlier tore round Royal Birkdale and posted a 64 to set the clubhouse target.
Young will be bitterly disappointed, especially as he came unstuck on the 18th after hitting his tee shot into the fairway bunker and smashing his approach into the lip.
It led to a devastating bogey and an agonising wait for the 29-year-old American.
Young watched an astonishing charge from the world number one, Scottie Scheffler, but the 2025 Open champion came up three shots shy of Fox.
Sam Burns, the 54-hole leader, could only muster a final round 72 to finish in solo third.
Home hope Tommy Fleetwood began the final round with dreams of still winning The Open but could only manage a 68 to finish in a share of fourth with Scheffler.
Fleetwood began his final round with a bang, holing a 73-foot putt for birdie but endured a torrid stretch around the turn.
Casey Jarvis, Lucas Herbert, Si Woo Kim, Adam Scott, Russell Henley, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Ludvig Aberg rounded out the top-10.
Bryson DeChambeau, who has endured a controversial week after incurring a two-shot penalty, had to settle for a share of 14th.
