The FedEx St. Jude Championship continues this weekend in Memphis.
After 36 holes of the first leg of the PGA Tour's play-offs, world number one Scottie Scheffler has a three-shot lead.
Scheffler began round two three strokes adrift of the early pacesetters but raced to the top of the leaderboard on Friday at TPC Southwind.
The world number one fired a 9-under 61 to reach 11-under par, three clear of South Korea's Sungjae Im and Norway's Viktor Hovland.
Scheffler told reporters after he tied the tournament course record that he cannot remember beginning a PGA Tour event with five consecutive birdies.
The American is hunting only his second victory of the campaign.
Elsewhere, Ludvig Aberg, Jordan Spieth and Tommy Fleetwood are inside the top-10.
Masters champion Rory McIlroy is well off the pace and has shown considerable rust on his first start since The Open at Royal Birkdale in July.
McIlroy, 37, wasn't expected to be here this week but U-turned on his decision, explaining before the $20m tournament began he felt it was "important to be here".
Scotland's Robert MacIntyre endured a calamitous day one, slumping to a career-worst 12-over 82.
MacIntyre withdrew before his second round on Friday, citing a knee injury.
