Suspended PGA Tour golfer launches new league with $1m Las Vegas finale
PGA Tour pro Wesley Bryan, his brother George, and Grant Horvat have announced the first key details of "Your Golf Tour".
Suspended PGA Tour pro Wesley Bryan is among the co-founders of a new golf league for content creators.
Bryan, 36, is currently banned from the North American circuit after participating in an exhibition match that was featured on LIV Golf's official YouTube channel last year.
He has appealed but as things stand it looks like his days being of a member are officially in the rearview mirror.
Bryan has already said he was prepared for this scenario and planned to concentrate all of his efforts on YouTube.
The one-time PGA Tour winner and his older brother, George, have been making content on YouTube since 2014 and are among the most popular creators in the space with 815,000 subscribers.
But they want to take things to a whole new level.
On Wednesday, the Bryan brothers and another hugely popular creator - Grant Horvat - announced the first details of "Your Golf Tour".
Initially, it will feature a group of 16 handpicked players from the digital golf space.
Four events will take place, culminating in a $1 million individual stroke-play championship at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas.
"Today, we are proud to announce the launch of a new venture, Your Golf Tour (YGT) a multi year Tour designed for high-level competition in the digital golf landscape," their joint statement read.
"Competitive golf is where we started. YouTube golf is where we've evolved. We believe there's a place for both. It's built by the Creators for the audience who has grown with us.
"For years, we imagined building a tour, but it felt out of reach. We're grateful for how much innovation has happened in Golf recently."
"We've experienced all that this space has to offer, and now it's time for the next chapter.
"Our vision is to create a structure for top players to perform under real pressure with significant stakes while remaining authentic to the YouTube format that we know and love."
Why is Wesley Bryan suspended?
Wesley Bryan appeared in an exhibition match last year that was published on LIV Golf's official YouTube channel.
The Duels saw several content creators link up with LIV Golf players and compete in a nine-hole scramble.
Bryan knew his appearance would land him in hot water, with the PGA Tour explaining that it would breach the media rights agreement.
But he chose to play anyway.
Bryan said he hoped the situation was going to change after five-time major champion Brooks Koepka was reinstated to the PGA Tour after quitting LIV.
He wrote a letter to PGA Tour officials asking for his situation to be reviewed, but was told his suspension remained indefinite.
"We got a response saying they reviewed the letter," he previously told the Dan on Golf show.
"But it was from basically their assistant saying 'no conversation is necessary.'
"That was pretty difficult. Like, why can’t we talk on the phone for 10 or 15 minutes?"
He added: "When you look at a lot of the discussions we've had and when you look at what a lot of fans are saying, I think people want the best people playing together again.
"So when it comes to great players like Brooks or Patrick Reed, Patrick Reed is a major champion and I think Brooks Koepka has won five majors, so having those guys competing out here is great for the tour, great for fans, and great for our sponsors.
"I think the last few years there has just been a lot of noise, and so I think getting those guys back is another step towards us just being able to play golf again. That's what I'm looking forward to most."
