Tiger Woods set for crucial PGA Tour board meeting as major changes take shape

Tiger Woods is set to be among the PGA Tour board members involved in a crucial meeting on Monday as the Tour moves closer to finalising the details of its new competitive structure.

Members of the PGA Tour Inc. board, including Woods and Adam Scott, are scheduled to meet virtually on September 14 alongside representatives of PGA Tour Enterprises. 

The meeting is expected to focus on several outstanding elements of the PGA Tour’s new Championship and Challenger Series model, with players set to receive further clarity on how promotion and relegation will work from 2028 onwards.

The Tour’s board approved the broad competitive model in June, with player director Patrick Cantlay abstaining. Since then, PGA Tour commissioner and CEO Brian Rolapp has said the focus has shifted from designing the system to putting the finer details in place.

Among the biggest questions are how players will earn promotion, who will be relegated and what status will be required to compete on the Championship Series.

Those issues have already raised concerns among former Tour players and officials. 

The PGA Tour is also expected to address eligibility rules, including the requirement for regular members to compete in at least 15 events during a season to retain full playing privileges. That is something Rory McIlroy fell short of this season by playing in just 14 PGA Tour events. 

Rolapp said at the Tour Championship last month that the rule is among several regulations being reconsidered as part of the new competitive model.

Another decision expected to come into focus is the status of the No.1 player in PGA Tour University, with the Tour yet to determine whether that player will gain access to the Championship or Challenger Series.

Monday’s meeting is not expected to settle every aspect of the overhaul. 

Rolapp has previously indicated that the process will require two rounds of approvals, with further decisions potentially coming at the Tour’s November 16 board meeting.

Players are expected to receive an internal memo outlining the latest eligibility and competitive details on Monday evening.

Rolapp, along with Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis and Senior Vice President of Competitions Kirsten Burgess, is then scheduled to brief the media on Tuesday morning.

The PGA Tour has targeted 22 February 2027 for the release of its complete 2028 schedules, including the Fall International Series.

For Woods and the other player directors, Monday’s meeting represents another important step in determining what the future of the PGA Tour will look like when the new structure takes effect.
