Wyndham Championship leaderboard: R3 scores as Cameron Young closes in on first PGA Tour title

Cameron Young is closing in on his first PGA Tour title. 

The American, 28, will take a five-shot lead into the final round of the Wyndham Championship. 

Young tore round Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina on Saturday, hitting six birdies and two bogeys for a third-round 65 to reach 20-under. 

He leads by five strokes over Colombia's Nicolas Echavarria. 

European Ryder Cup hopeful Aaron Rai, along with American duo Chris Kirk and Mac Meissner are tied for third on 11-under. 

Matthew Fitzpatrick and Gary Woodland are also inside the top-10. 

Young is widely regarded as one of the best players on a major tour yet to enter the winner's circle. 

He has had a number of close calls, including a runner-up finish to Cameron Smith at the 2022 Open Championship at St Andrews. 

In June, he had another near miss at the RBC Canadian Open. 

He trailed by one stroke going into the final round and, in truth, should've been in a playoff but played the final hole in terrible fashion to slip back into fourth. 

"This very moment, a lot of anger, a bit of frustration," he said in the immediate aftermath of that disappointment. "Kind of just want to go home right now."

The Wyndham Championship is the final event of the regular season before the playoffs begin next week in Memphis. 

Only the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings at the conclusion of the Wyndham get a tee time at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. 

Keith Mitchell, Max Homa and Sahith Theegala were among the notables whose season has ended early. 

Rory McIlroy has decided to skip next week's event.
