USA complete stunning Presidents Cup comeback over Internationals at Medinah

Brandt Snedeker’s side overturned a three-point deficit at Medinah to beat the Internationals 17-13 after taking 9.5 points from a possible 12 on Sunday.

Team USA have done it again – but this time they had to do it the hard way.

Brandt Snedeker’s side have won the 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club, extending the United States’ extraordinary dominance of the biennial contest with a 14th victory overall and an 11th consecutive triumph.

But the final scoreline tells only part of the story.

The USA trailed Geoff Ogilvy’s Internationals 10.5-7.5 heading into Sunday’s singles, leaving the home side with a three-point deficit to overturn if they were to retain the Presidents Cup.

What followed was an extraordinary final day.

The United States produced a remarkable fightback, taking 9.5 points from a possible 12 on Sunday to turn a three-point deficit into a 17-13 victory and complete the largest final-day comeback in Presidents Cup history.

It was an impressive response from a team that had suddenly found itself under serious pressure.

The Internationals had already made history by becoming the first International team to hold a lead going into the final day of a Presidents Cup on American soil. They had arrived at Medinah as heavy outsiders but had spent the opening three days thoroughly disrupting the expected script.

For the United States, however, Sunday was about responding.

The atmosphere was electric before the first tee time, with U.S. President Donald Trump arriving at the opening hole ahead of the 12 singles matches to show his support for the American team.

Snedeker later revealed that Trump had told him he was going to bring some energy to the occasion.

The American captain certainly got the response he was looking for.

“These guys never lost faith, I know what this team room is like,” Snedeker said afterwards.

“I told the guys that funny stuff happens here. Medinah has got a history of funny things happening, and sure enough they went out there and played their asses off and I’m so damn proud of those guys.”

One of the biggest stories of the American comeback was 21-year-old rookie Jackson Koivun.

One of Snedeker’s six captain’s picks, Koivun found himself two holes down against Si Woo Kim and appeared to have a mountain to climb. Instead, the youngster produced some of his best golf of the week on the back nine, overturning the deficit before closing out a superb 2up victory.

It was exactly the sort of pressure moment Snedeker had hoped Koivun could handle when he selected him for the team.

“I cannot get over what Jackson Koivun did today,” Snedeker said. “I put him in a really tough spot out there today and we thought he could handle it, and sure enough he did and looked like the stud we know he’s going to be.”

Snedeker was even more emphatic when discussing the rookie’s finish.

“The kid is special, he’s different, you saw that for a 21-year-old kid to hit those last two balls like he did, not many people like that. I’ve got a team full of them over there but they are very rare to find.”

Jacob Bridgeman also played a crucial role in the comeback, beating Min Woo Lee 1up to secure his first Presidents Cup point as a rookie. His victory took the United States to the magic 15.5 points required to clinch the Cup.

“I’m also so damn proud of Jacob Bridgeman, getting his first point as a Presidents Cup rookie,” Snedeker said.

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler also produced one of the most memorable moments of the day during his match against Nico Echavarria. After a fan shouted during Scheffler’s backswing on the 14th tee, the American responded by giving Echavarria a 30-foot putt for par.

It was a remarkable display of sportsmanship in the middle of an incredibly tense singles match, with Scheffler’s wife Meredith reportedly left wanting to cry at the gesture.

Scheffler did not allow the incident to derail him, eventually winning the match 2&1.

For Ogilvy and his players, it was ultimately a painful way for an impressive week to end.

The Internationals had given the United States a much greater test than many expected, and Tom Kim finished as their leading points scorer with four points from a possible five.

The 24-year-old now heads straight to the Asian Games, where a gold medal in either the individual or team competition would reportedly earn him an exemption from South Korea’s mandatory military service.

Ogilvy admitted afterwards that he was left wondering what might have been after several matches went down to the wire.

“The U.S. team came out firing and we knew they would,” he said. “It was just a couple of matches that went up 18... if some of those 1 downs out there would have flipped to 1up, who knows what would have happened. But well done to Brandt’s team.”

The Internationals can nevertheless take plenty of encouragement from their performance at Medinah as they look ahead to the next Presidents Cup at Kingston Heath in Australia in 2028.

Ogilvy admitted he had started Sunday with genuine hope of pulling off the upset.

“I was pretty nervous, started the day with some hope,” he said. “Thought the lineup was good, but everyone has got to play well. To win that many points was a challenge.

“We were all pretty excited, but it just drifted the wrong way during the day and then the crowd gets involved as they should, that’s the home advantage. Thought Chicago was great, we all had a really good time.”

For the United States, though, the numbers tell the story.

10.5-7.5 down.

9.5 points won on Sunday.

17-13 winners.

An impressive comeback, another Presidents Cup secured and an 11th consecutive victory for Team USA.
