Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods' indoor golf league will return for its third season on 27 December.

TGL will open its season at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, the league confirmed, with the opening match and start time to be announced.

The league will again open against the NFL, after its second-season opener drew 646,000 viewers on ABC last year.

TGL and ESPN also announced a new multi-year media rights agreement, extending their partnership and keeping ESPN as the league's domestic media rights partner.

"ESPN has been the ultimate partner in helping establish TGL, combining unparalleled promotion, reach and sports presentation," Rufus Hack, president of golf for TMRW Sports, said.

The league, founded by Woods, McIlroy and TMRW Sports, attracted 21.782m viewers across its second season, an eight per cent increase from 20.215m in its first season.

Last season's opener between Atlanta Drive and New York Golf Club peaked at more than 700,000 viewers twice during the two-hour broadcast.

The league said its opening-day rating was 30% higher than its average for the inaugural season.

The Los Angeles Golf Club's 9-2 victory over Woods' Jupiter Links Golf Club in the second-season final on 24 March averaged 989,000 viewers on ESPN.

It was the most-watched broadcast of the season and the second-most-watched match in TGL history.

The match also marked Woods' return to competitive golf following back surgery.

TGL will expand to seven teams for its third season with the addition of Motor City Golf Club.

Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka will play for the new team, making his TGL debut.

The Palm Beach County native and Jupiter resident was ineligible for the league's first two seasons because of his LIV Golf contract.

Koepka left LIV Golf in January and rejoined the PGA Tour this year.

"The addition of Motor City Golf Club this season builds on that momentum, bringing a great sports city and passionate fan base into TGL as we continue to grow the league," Hack said.

TGL's third season will follow the inaugural season of WTGL, a new indoor team golf league featuring LPGA players.

WTGL begins on 8 November and concludes on 22 December, with matches to be broadcast by ESPN, ABC and ION.

TGL's third season will begin five days later.
