Nicolai Hojgaard hits the worst SHANK of the DP World Tour season!

Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard hit one of the worst shots of his career on day two of the DP World Tour's Mallorca Golf Open when he shanked his ball into the water on the par-5 11th.

Hojgaard, 21, found the fairway with his tee shot and had 266 yards to the hole.

He took out a long iron and then proceeded to hit golf's dreaded shot way right into the ripples.

“Oh,” said former Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance in the Sky Sports commentary box.

“You may never see a shot like that again from Nicolai Hojgaard.

“That was extraordinary.

“There’s a lot of golfers watching today saying to themselves, ‘if one of the best in the world can do that, I don’t feel too bad."

To his credit, he went on to salvage a bogey-six on the hole and then bounced back with three consecutive birdies from the 15th to shoot a round of 2-under 69.

Hojgaard finds himself with plenty to do over the weekend though as he finds himself six shots behind 36-hole leader Dale Whitnell.

The Englishman will take a one-shot halfway lead into the final two days over World No. 25 Ryan Fox.

Nicolai's twin brother and three-time DP World Tour winner Rasmus Højgaard is three shots off the pace on 8-under par alongside Max Kieffer and Hugo Leon.

Whitnell was the star of day two on the Balaeric Island, firing a bogey-free 8-under par 63 to move to an 11-under par total.

Fox, who sits third in the DP World Tour Rankings and could move to second this week with a strong finish, leads the chasing pack on 10-under par after a second round 64.

The Kiwi holed out with his approach at the par-4 third hole to add to five birdies, and the 35-year-old has not dropped a shot since his first hole of the week on day one.
