45" Stock shaft: Matrix VLCT ST

Key features

  • The adjustable new "FlipZone" weight ensures the centre of gravity can be moved forward (promotes low spin) or back (adds 400 RPM of spin)
  • A titanium body is combined with a carbon-fibre crown - weight saved as a result is re-positioned low in the head to improve forgiveness

Looks: The appearance is very hard to fault. The head looks slightly smaller than the standard Fly-Z, which will likely appeal more to better players, but it still possessed a deep enough face and colourful crown at address to get excited about. The neat Cobra logo acts as a suitable alignment, strengthened with the curved line to the back of the crown. Tester's comment: "Perhaps a little compact for my liking, but very stylish."

Feel: The Fly-Z+ is 0.5" shorter than the standard Fly-Z driver, but felt just as easy to control. Although the sound off the face was a little loud, it was by no means overpowering. Tester's comment: "A hearty sound and a very stable shaft."

Performance: Just as long and forgiving as its brother, particularly when the "FlipZone" weight was adjusted to the forward position as the ball came out with less spin. Both testers preferred the launch from the standard Fly-Z, however, as the Fly-Z+ generated a lower launch. Accuracy was not as tight as the standard model but it was straight enough. While an impressive piece of technology that clearly adjusts ball flight and backspin, both testers found adjusting the weight to be too fiddly, particularly in comparison to other adjustable drivers on the market. Tester's comment: "There is room for improvement when it comes to ease of use."

Verdict: SILVER

Just as forgiving and as powerful as the standard Cobra Fly-Z driver, but we found launch angle to be much lower. The classic, compact look about the head will likely appeal to better players and while the adjustable "FlipZone" weight technology performs well and shifts the CG, we did not find it very easy to adjust. A little pricey at £349 given how impressed we are with the standard Fly-Z driver (£249).
