PXG Gen 7 0311P Irons: Key Features

  • 5X Forged: from 8620 steel for enhanced feel and aesthetics
  • Precision weighting technology: large centre weight can be altered to dial in the ideal swing weight
  • Internal Tungsten weighting: balances the CG in the centre of the face while boosting MOI to increase forgiveness

Entering their 7th generation, PXG's 0311P irons are going from strength to strength.

The latest iteration of PXG's hugely popular players' irons has undergone a serious makeover, and there has been plenty of work done under the hood, too.

Five times forged from 8620 steel and boasting internal Tungsten weighting and precision weighting technology, there has been no stoned left unturned in the persuit of crafting the ultimate player's iron.

PXG is a relatively new brand on the scene compared to the likes of Callaway and Titleist, but in only a shot period of time it's managed to give the big boys some serious pause for thought.

We were fortunate enough to go to a full fitting for these irons at PXG's London South store and once we were measured up we took them out on the course with our Foresight GC3 launch monitor to find out just how good they are.

Let's get into it.

Player Level

Marketed as a player's iron, the 0311Ps are ideally suited to golfers with handicaps ranging from scratch up to about 15. While the feel and balance of these irons are impeccable, there is also plenty of forgiveness on offer for golfers who aren't premium ball strikers.

PXG Gen 7 0311P Irons Looks and Feel

Fresh out of the plastic, these irons look superb. In years gone by PXG's irons have been instantly recognisable due to the abundance of interchangeable weights featured across the back of the head.

This year, however, PXG has opted to hide the weights, leaving a much cleaner looking head.

This decision is one we're big fans of. Despite not being adverse to the look of the Gen 6 Irons, the overall visual appeal of Gen 7 has undoubtedly been elevated.

One single weight is still positioned in the centre of the head, flanked by PXG branding and some lovely milled detailing.

The overall design is a home run in our eyes, and the impressive visuals don't stop there.

Down at address these irons look fantastic. the refined topline and chrome finish instantly caught our eye, while the sharp toe profile and minimal offset will undoubtedly appeal to the better golfer.

It's also worth mentioning that these irons are available in two finishes. We wen't for the chrome but they also come in a completely blacked option for those that want it.

In terms of feel, these irons are hot. The new face on these irons is 15% thinner than Gen 6 measuring only 1.27mm at its thinnest point.

As a result, you get that lovely deep forged sensation out of the middle as well as a suitable level of feedback from toe or heel strikes.

It must be said though, that even during our fitting when we were hitting less than perfect shots, the feel is still absolutely superb.

The noise that accompanies that feel is also suitably satisfying. A solid crack that's slightly on the higher end of the spectrum rings around your ears with every strike.

PXG Gen 7 0311P Irons Performance and Forgiveness

When I went to get fitted for the 0311P Irons I was going into it thinking my benchmark for a seven iron was about 165 carry, as that was what I was used to with my current gamers.

As you can see from the numbers above, my expectations were quite quickly blown away by the number I was able to achieve with these irons.

While the additional distance was obviously very welcome, almost every other performance metric was also absolutely spot on.

From spin to descent angle and eventual roll out, I was hitting every single window I wanted to.

A big part of this improvement is not only down to the new tech under the hood in these irons but also the excellent level of customisation available with the excellent fitter we saw at PXG's store.

Thanks to the removable weight in the centre of the club, each individual iron can be tailored to an exact swing weight.

This is an option that isn't on offer from every brand, and really makes a huge difference.

I was honestly amazed at difference each little change made, and when I held the final product in my hand I felt like I was never going to hit a bad shot ever again.

Powerful, controlled and arguably most impressively very forgiving, these irons really are the full package.

My bad shot tends to be out of the toe, resulting in a big loss of speed and spin. While there was still a drop off from bas strikes, these irons manage to dramatically limit it.

All in all we have to hand it to PXG, as a brand they are prone to making big and loud promises, but they have fully followed through on them with the creation of these irons.

Should you buy a set of PXG Gen 7 0311P Irons?

These irons are excellent, there's no two ways about it. From the updated aesthetics to the premium performance, there is just so much to love about them.

PXG was known for somewhat ludicrous pricing back in the day, but even that has been more measured in recent years, which means you won't have to remortgage your house to buy a set now.

We love these irons and we think you will too. As always we recommend getting fitted for new clubs, but in this case it's particularly important.

As previously mentioned, in the hands of a PXG fitter you can alter the swing weight of each iron, and while only a small detail, it makes a huge difference to performance, so go and see Miguel at PXG London South and tell him Johnny sent you.
