This long-standing Rory McIlroy record may soon be shattered

Everyone knew Aldrich Potgieter was a big hitter when he made his full tour debut in 2025, but few expected him to rewrite the record books quite so quickly.

The big-hitting young South African has made a name for himself thanks to his booming drives over the past 18 months, stamping his authority on the Tour by winning his first professional title at the Rocket Classic this time last year. 

2026 has brought more mixed fortunes for the 21-year-old, who despite his distance has made just 9 of 18 cuts. He's also near the bottom of the leaderboard in his Rocket Classic title defence.

He is, however on course to make history in just his second full year on the PGA Tour, with his sights set on Rory McIlroy's long-standing driving distance record.

The Northern Irishman set the official record at the peak of his powers back in 2023, hitting it an average of 326.3 yards with the driver. Potgieter, however, is averaging over 330 yards per shot so far this year, putting him well on track to blitz the record.

Potgieter's average distance is 25 yards longer than the tour average, which currently sits at around 305 yards, and has gone a long way to placing him 64th in the FedEx Cup standings – the second-highest rank for a player under the age of 23. 

This is despite the South African shedding a significant amount of weight in the 2025 off-season.

The PXG ambassador averaged 335 yards in driving distance during the first round of play at Detroit Golf Club on Thursday, but faces a tough fight to get himself back above the cut line after carding a 6-over 76. American Peter Maitani currently leads the pack on 9-under.
