TaylorMade’s new P7CB irons have arrived to replace the existing TaylorMade P7MC model. These forged players' irons have already gone in the bag of Rory McIlroy, and we’ve tested them out to find out why.

The TaylorMade P7CBs sit just above the pure muscle-back TaylorMade P7MB but below the TaylorMade P770, and they bridge the gap more efficiently than their predecessors, the P7MCs. Optimised perimeter weighting, as well as a hidden co-forged tungsten weight, give the irons added stability and improved forgiveness throughout the set.

It’s clear that TaylorMade has listened to Tour and consumer feedback when producing these irons, and they've already made their way into our best golf irons of 2024 list.

To find out how the TaylorMade P7CB Irons really performed, we took them down to Mannings Heath and tested them using a Foresight GC3.

Let’s get into it.

Player Level

The refined shaping of the TaylorMade P7CBs does make them suited to a broader level of golfers than the P7MC. That being said, we wouldn’t recommend them to anyone above single digits, as they're certainly still a true players’ iron.

TaylorMade P7CB Looks and feel

The P7CBs could have the best shelf appeal of any TaylorMade iron we’ve ever tested (although the new P770s certainly run them close). The subtle, refined looks of a players’ iron coupled with a nostalgic RAC aesthetic gives the P7CBs a modern yet sophisticated design, that’s not too in your face.

Down at address, the P7CB’s are certainly less intimidating than their predecessor the P7MC. The topline is slightly thicker, and the shaping overall is certainly more confidence inspiring.

With each individual head undergoing 2,000 tons of pressure in the forging process, the feel is as you’d expect, but still has flashes of that notable TaylorMade DNA.

The iron is extremely soft. There are other irons in the market that are softer, but what TaylorMade does so well is make their irons feel so unique and positive across the face. The turf interaction is also noticeably improved compared to the P7MCs, which is is a big plus.

TaylorMade P7CB Performance and Forgiveness

When it comes to a proper players iron, we're never expecting the numbers to blow us away in terms of distance or forgiveness.

During testing, we took a 6-iron to one of the par-3s at Mannings Heath and used our Foresight GC3 launch monitor to analyse the data at a more granular level.

What impressed us the most for the TaylorMade P7CB is how the iron was able to tick every box in terms of performance, with forgiveness being the most notable metric that has improved.

The irons will still tell you when you miss the sweet spot, that’s a given in a players iron. The ball speed did dip by up to 10% on poor strikes,  but the spin and launch angle stayed incredibly consistent to the point where we didn’t find ourselves hitting any truly bad shots.

As a four handicap, we wouldn’t look to have the P7CB’s in the longer irons (4 & 5), but that isn’t an issue at all. The P7CB’s blend so well with the new TaylorMade P770’s, that it’s almost a given that a consumer should experiment with a combination set to see what is more optimal to their game.

A fitting is thoroughly recommended to experience the performance of the new TaylorMade P7CB’s and how your combo could be built.

Should you buy the TaylorMade P7CB Irons?

If you’re a low handicapper that desires a true players iron then we're struggling to think of an iron the delivers a better all around package than the P7CB.

The CBs are outstanding performers but also ideal for blending with the whole of TaylorMade's P series, so we would highly recommend any golfer take full advantage of a full fitting to explore the idea of a combo set.
