Longstanding golf commentator Gary McCord has revealed in an interview on SiriusXM PGA Tour radio that he is fuming with the reasons for being fired from CBS Sports golf coverage.

Speaking on the Gravy and The Sleeze show, McCord - arguably the funniest golf commentator on the planet - explained how there were two things that really disappointed him after learning he was being axed alongside his two other well-respected colleagues Peter Kostis and Bill Macatee.

The former PGA Tour player said that CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus told him in a phone call that their golf coverage had become "stale."

"Stale did not work for me," said McCord. "That kind of got me riled up a bit. I didn’t like that at all."

The outspoken commentator also revealed his distress at not being able to say goodbye in person to the rest of the team he has worked with for the entirety of his golf broadcast career.

"You just don't do something like this," he said. "You shouldn't do it this way. No chance to say thanks to the viewers, to all my CBS friends? That's what you get for 35 years?

"I don't like the fact that they kind of set my balloon on fire without me going back to my colleagues."

McCord added he is planning on attending the Phoenix Open in February where he will likely drop in to say goodbye to the team.

Kostis, who had been breaking down golf swings on CBS ever since 1992, is treating his departure with a little more optimism.

"As I look to my future, it will most definitely include going back to my teaching roots, completely unfiltered, in some form or fashion [maybe a book], and I'm really excited about that," said Kostis.

"As well, there are numerous new opportunities for covering golf that are very interesting."
