Rounds of golf played in the United States were up by 10 million in July 2020 compared against July 2019, according to the latest numbers from Golf Datatech.

It marks the biggest spike in rounds of golf in the nation since 1997 - something that can only be put down to the coronavirus pandemic according to former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy.

"It cannot be denied that Covid has helped golf," Ogilvy told The Telegraph.

"It's a healthy outdoor exercise and it's only going to get bigger. At the start of it all, when The Masters was being postponed and The Open was cancelled, I was like 'oh my, this is like Armageddon'."

"But now, six months on, the Tours are doing it better than any other professional sport."

The latest data also reveals that golf equipment sales have equally gone through the roof at $380 million, the equivalent of £300 million.

This marks the nation's greatest ever single month for golf retail.

The increase in golf's popularity over in the United States is very much in line with the United Kingdom, with rounds of golf played up 61% in June, 40% in July and 60% in August, according to the latest data.

For many people, golf has been a key social outlet, as well as a way of preserving mental and physical health through the pandemic.

Widespread working from home has also meant that many commuters now have an extended morning or evening without the pressures of a long journey to and from work, making early morning or twilight nine or 18 holes more achievable than ever before.
