Golf fans are losing their minds after a report claims a sequel to the classic 1996 Adam Sandler comedy 'Happy Gilmore' is very much in the works.

According to a report on Deadline, actor Christopher McDonald (who plays Shooter McGavin in the legendary golf film) revealed in an interview on Audacy's 92.3 The Fan how Sandler has already shown him a first draft of 'Happy Gilmore 2'.

McDonald said:

"I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this'. I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2."

McDonald then suggested his comments should perhaps be 'cut' from the interview, before adding he "didn't want to be a liar".

However, McDonald then continued:

"Adam did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!"

According to sources, should 'Happy Gilmore 2' hit the screens it will follow in the footsteps of the PGA Tour's 'Full Swing' docu-series by heading onto streaming service Netflix

Legendary golf film 'Happy Gilmore' grossed over $82m worldwide following its launch some 28 years ago.

It was released by Universal Pictures, and Sandler and Tim Herlihy wrote the script, with Dennis Dugan as the director.

The film saw 'Happy' take up the game of golf with no prior knowledge of it other than being able to strike a pure hockey puck.

'Happy' wanted to get involved in the sport once seeing the hefty prize money on offer in qualifying events, as he did everything he could to save his grandmother's house.

With the help of retired golf pro Chubbs Peterson, played by the late Carl Weathers, 'Happy' took his game to new heights and hit some of the longest drives of all time.

Happy's very aggressive playing style and behavior irked many of his peers on Tour, none more so than McGavin.

The duo were then locked in a final-round battle for the Tour Championship, and it all came down to the 18th hole where drama unfolded as a tower collapsed on the green and Happy saw out the win.
