Lucas Glover has become the first player in his 40s since Vijay Singh in 2008 to win back to back tournaments on the PGA Tour following playoff victory over Patrick Cantlay at the FedEx St Jude Championship at famed TPC Southwind.

Glover, 43, carded a final-round 69 to finish the week at 15-under par alongside Cantlay, who fired a round of 64.

But Cantlay drove into the water on the first playoff hole (par-4 18th) and Glover took full advantage by making a simple par to win consecutive titles on the PGA Tour.

Glover also won the Wyndham Championship seven days previous, a victory that saw him qualify for the 70-man FedEx St Jude Championship that marked the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The 2009 US Open champion has incredibly finished in the top six in five of his last six starts on the PGA Tour.

The latest victory sees Glover earn $3.6m and vault into the top five in the FedEx Cup standings.

Glover has now won six times on the PGA Tour.

Cantlay, the World No.4, is still looking for his first win on the PGA Tour this season.

Rory McIlroy narrowly missed out on the playoff by one stroke after a round of 65.

McIlroy finished on 14-under par in a tie for third alongside Tommy Fleetwood, who closed with a 68.

McIlroy, who switched to a Scotty Cameron putter this week, played alongside Cantlay and birdied the final hole from 30 feet to finish tied third.

Despite his near-miss, McIlroy is taking the positives into the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

McIlroy said:

"It's hard because I feel like it's been an average week. I hit a ton of fairways, ton of greens, gave myself chances. Shot four really good scores. There are so many different points I could think about but it's another really, really solid week, and a confidence builder to take into next week and then East Lake."

On switching his putter, McIlroy said:

"It's a slightly shallower face, I get it out the middle and my speed is better with it. I felt my speed was good most of the week and I think I putted pretty well. I'll keep it in the bag next week and see what happens."

McIlroy has now had eight top-10s in his last 10 events.

Taylor Moore had a front nine to forget when starting out in the final group of the day but he rallied late in the day, highlighted by a 30 footer for birdie on 18 to finish solo fifth on 12-under par.

Jon Rahm remains out in front in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the 50-man BMW Championship starting on Thursday.

Rahm finished well down the field in a rare tie for 37th on 5-under par, one stroke worse than World No.1 Scottie Scheffler

The top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings after that tournament will then head to East Lake to compete in the Tour Championship.

The winner of that will take home the FedEx Cup.
