AMP Cell

The Cobra AMP Cell fairway wood features Cobra’s new MyFly Technology and is offered in a 3-4 or 5-7 model, each of which can be adjusted to offer six different loft/trajectory options in four different colours. The AMP Cell 3-wood can be adjusted to 13, 14, 14 Draw, 15, 15 Draw or 16-degrees.

Aesthetically, this club - tested in orange, 3-4 Fairway - looks very cool and is about as trendy as they come, particularly in this flashy orange model as used by Cobra Puma staffer Rickie Fowler.

The Cobra logo in the centre helped me align with confidence and the big sweetspot is hard to miss. I was also taken by the eye-catching paint splattered graphic Fujikura Fuel shaft.

The Fujikura Fuel shaft felt a little lighter than ideal but balanced through my entire swing. Although the sound off the face was a little loud, it was by no means overpowering. I also received a powerful sensation as the club crushed the ball at impact.

Performance-wise, this baby is effortless to get airborne. It appeared much easier to hit and much more impressive than the AMP Cell driver. The adjustable loft sleeve with MyFly technology -featuring six adjustable loft settings - proved a tremendous help to optimise my overall performance.

The adjustability allowed me to optimise the distance gapping between my woods. It's also very easy to adjust the loft of the AMP Cell by simply loosening the screw rotating the shaft to the desired position - simple, even for someone as technically useless as myself!

This easy-to-use system allowed me to quickly change loft and to fill the distance gap in my bag - the loft selected is easy to view due to the 'window' in the hosel.

I was striking the ball best using the 4, 16-degree. The ability to get the ball in the air and down my target line is more important than distance for me when it comes to fairway woods.

The sole of the clubhead also features Cobra's Smart Pad Technology which incorporates a curved cell band in the same matching colour as the crown. Smart Pad automatically squares the club face at address no matter which loft angle you select so you don't have to worry about another adjustment.

Verdict

Easy to hit and high launching. It also seemed a little more forgiving and easier to hit than the original AMP fairway. I would like to have felt a weightier sensation at impact, however. About average in the distance stakes, with shots flying around 200 yards and rolling out to around 215.

Pro Verdict - PGA pro Grant Guerin

The orange look doesn’t appeal much butgood alignment aid and feel behind it. I like this club’s ability to adjust face and lie angle, perfect for when I’m playing in different weather or to suit me on a particular type of course. Easy to work both ways and good distance.
