JPX 850 iron

Looks

All testers were instantly pleased to see Mizuno move back to the former silver and blue design, instead of the loud orange and black of the JPX-EZ last year, but the majority did not take much to the thick topline and decent amount of offset. The new cut-away "Dual Relief Zone" helps to make the sole play a little narrower. Tester's comment: "I've always associated Mizuno with being blue."

Feel

The majority received a soft "buttery" feel at impact. As expected from a large, forgiving iron, however, feedback is minimal on off-centre hits. Sound was similar to the JPX 825 of several years ago, so if you liked the slightly "clicky" sound before, then you will enjoy this. The stock True Temper shaft felt a bit too lightweight but will likely provide slow swing speed players among you with a bit more firepower. Tester's comment: "Soft enough but not a fan of the sound."

Performance

Another case of "never judge an iron by its topline". No longer than last year's JPX-EZ iron, despite the addition of the "Power Frame", but long enough for the majority of testers. Tremendous forgiveness, easy launch and tight dispersion across the board, too. Tester's comment: "Wow, a revelation. Above-average distance and one of the most accurate in the test."

Verdict

Left on the lip for a place on our podium. Looks were not for everyone but feel was expected from these "feel specialists". Although not the longest in the test, JPX 850 proved easy to get airborne and was one of the more forgiving irons. Great value for money at £499.
