S56

A major winner, this design appeals to players who put a premium on shot control.

The PING S56 has a steel body with variable tungsten toe weighting positions the CG for higher-launching long irons and more controlled short irons. Its Stabilizing Bar Technology varies in width throughout the set to optimise each iron’s CG location.

To my eye, PING irons in the past have always been top-of-the range in everything but the looks department. However, the S56s buck the trend as they look great - thin sole, minimal offset and sharp lines. A classic player's club apearance.

The S56s are cast not forged but don't let this put you off. They don't feel hard or make a horrible sound - two attributes that often put people off cast irons.

I found the irons easy to work in any direction and I also had great control over my ball flight. They're player irons so as expected they weren't the most forgiving club I've ever used but that being said they still went a decent distance when they were struck off-centre.

Verdict

An attractive club that provides great control and makes working the ball easy. Good feel and sound for a cast iron.
