Former Masters champion to make first appearance at BMW PGA Championship

Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama has confirmed he will tee it up at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth over 11-14 September.

Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama has confirmed he will make his first appearance at the DP World Tour's flagship event.

Matsuyama will tee it up at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth over 11-14 September.

He joins a world-class field that includes several members of the European side that will head to Bethpage Black in New York for the Ryder Cup.

Reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy will headline the field. Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Hojgaard are also playing.

Major champions Patrick Reed and Wyndham Clark are also in the field. Matsuyama will make his debut in the $9m tournament.

The most notable omission is Sepp Straka. The Austrian is widely expected to be handed a captain's pick by European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald for the Bethpage showdown.

Straka withdrew from the second event of the PGA Tour's play-offs, citing personal reasons. He returned to action at the Tour Championship, but finished last in the 30-man field.

Billy Horschel won the 2024 BMW PGA Championship, overcoming the aforementioned McIlroy in an electric play-off.

The American is making his first start since undergoing surgery on his hip. The procedure sidelined Horschel several months and torpedoed any hopes he had of making the 2025 US Ryder Cup team.
